About the artist: Milan Hawthorne's "Jazz on Glass" series uses a Lost and Found aesthetic where he transforms scavenged windowpanes into portraits of African American musical icons. His subjects appear like stained glass in the church that Black music built. These simple snapshots are a window into the type of musical genius that we can study and reflect upon, but never again touch. As a whole Hawthorne's work varies in form and presentation, from recycled wood and glass, to canvas and guerilla-style graffiti. Yet consistent in every medium is a collage of the African American psyche with its constant negotiation of time and space while under attack in an ever futuristic present. His use of shadow, silhouette, saturated color, and recurring graffiti character (Beats Me) speak to his influences: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kara Walker, Romare Bearden and graffiti artists past and present. Milan Hawthorne's unique stylistic rhythms are a mash up of the Jazz and Funk influences of his parents and the 80's baby child of Hip Hop that he is. He weaves music, history and the collective dreams and nightmares embedded into his DNA, all with a playful wink. And always present, like a message in a bottle across his creative unconscious, there is the eternal note: All roads lead to (Mama) Africa.
